Chrysler had a forging and machining plant in this city for many years, but sold it in 2003. In deference to the automaker’s importance in the city, the school was called Walter P. Chrysler Memorial High School in 1958, when a new building was opened, and later amended to New Castle Chrysler High School. The belated vote to remove Chrysler’s name takes effect once the current freshman class graduates, in 2011. The school’s name will then become just plain New Castle High School.

The hybrid system in the 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango Hemi Hybrids will deliver an estimated 385 horsepower, the company said. The Chrysler hybrids use a two-mode hybrid system that links a 5.7-liter V8 with a multi-displacement system and electric motors. Chrysler expects the new hybrids to return 18 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway.

The Chrysler Aspen Hybrid for 2008, along with stable-mate Dodge Durango Hybrid, will both offer Chrysler Group’s all-new 5.7-liter HEMI hybrid power train. These debuts mark the first volume-production hybrid offerings from the Chrysler Group and the first vehicle to feature Daimler Chrysler’s advanced 2-mode hybrid technology. The new 5.7-liter HEMI Hybrid is expected to deliver an overall fuel economy improvement of more than 25%, including an improvement of nearly 40% in the city.

Chrysler group excitedly announced further details of their first mainstream hybrid production vehicles this week. The full sized Aspen and Durango SUV’s are powered by HEMI engines- but are now available with a hybrid drive system that helps improve overall fuel efficiency by over 25%.

We’re afraid so, but the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango (above) hybrids, at least in theory, offers some significant economy gains. It’s also a further glimpse into the system that will power GM products, the BMW X6 and forthcoming 7-series , and cars from Chrysler’s ex-partner, Mercedes .

Separately, Nardelli told employees during a webcast last week that although he believes the automaker has cut as many workers as it needs to, Chrysler will continue slashing jobs if it cannot meet its goals. The company said previously it would cut 25,000 jobs, including 1,000 buyouts. Chrysler announced 12,000 of those in November, just after employees represented by the UAW ratified a new four-year contract.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Chrysler, under the new leadership of Vice Chairman and President Jim Press and CEO Robert Nardelli, is taking bold steps to streamline operations. The automaker previously announced it would cut the Chrysler Pacifica and Crossfire, Dodge Magnum and PT Cruiser convertible from the lineup. Now Chrysler has killed off the PT Cruiser entirely; it will go away after the 2009 model year, according to a Wall Street Journal report today.

While GM used the LA Auto Show to display its new full-size hybrids , Chrysler was busy doing exactly the same thing. Chrysler may have parted company with Mercedes-Benz, but that hasn’t stopped it from making use of the two-mode hybrid technology that it developed with its old partner together with BMW and General Motors. Both the Chrysler Aspen and the Dodge Durango will come with available hybrid drivetrains for the 2008 model year at an as-yet-undisclosed price.
