The initiative, which will be marketed under the tagline that Chrysler’s new owners are ushering in a New Day for the struggling No. 3 US-based automaker, will be introduced to Chrysler dealers next month, Chrysler executives said at the Detroit car show. The plan includes intended fixes and upgrades to more than 260 vehicle features, and price changes covering 12 models.

Built on the strength of retail, Chrysler LLC’s total U.S. sales for December 2007 were 191,423 units; an increase of 1 percent compared with December 2006 sales of 190,415 units. Fleet sales for the month were down, as compared with December 2006. For 2007, total Chrysler LLC sales were 2,076,650, a decrease of 3 percent from the 2,142,505 units sold in 2006. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.

Joining the Grand Caravan R/T in undeserved anonymity is the Chrysler 300 Hollywood. Built on a stretched version of the popular sedan, it’s most distinctive characteristic is its reverse landaulet cabin. Unlike a traditional landaulet, where the rear passengers are treated to an open-top experience, the 300 Hollywood envelops them in a privacy-providing cocoon of steel, glass, and leather while letting the driver enjoy the fresh (smoggy) air. Interesting, unusual, and completely forgotten.

Toyota sold 48,226 more cars and trucks than Ford, according to sales figures released today. Toyota’s sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products like the Toyota Tundra pickup, which saw sales jump 57 percent. Ford corporate historian Bob Kreipke said it was the first time since 1931 that Ford wasn’t second behind General Motors Corp. Ford said U.S.

Employees at Belvidere’s Chrysler plant learned in November the third shift would be cut to save money. Layoffs at five other plants were announced too. UAW Local 1268 President Tom Littlejohn says they got a warning those layoffs would start January 31st. Instead it’s been pushed back to February 25th. Littlejohn says, They set the date back. I think it was initially set up for the 18th of February.

The repetitive work (at Chrysler) was hard at first, but I got used to it, Franklin said of his work in the decking department. I have my (commercial driver s license) so I can go drive a truck, but I really hope to get back in the plant. I like it there. I worked at Rockford Products and Amerock, and this is the first job I go to clean and come home clean.

Jack Wolf, who with his daughter owns two car dealerships in Belvidere and sells Chrysler cars, said Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, that he is optimistic that Chrysler’s layoffs will be temporary. Chrysler is laying off about 1,100 temporary workers at the Belvidere assembly plant, which will eliminate the third shift.
