Chrysler’s trio of battery-powered cars
November 21st, 2007Chrysler will unveil three electric concept cars at the Detroit motor show in January. Called the Chrysler EcoVoyager, Dodge Zeo and Jeep Renegade, all three are principally powered by lithium-ion batteries, and promise ranges of 250-mile plus. Chrysler EcoVoyager Despite the Voyager name, this car is only a four-seater.
The car’s distinctive packaging is a result of the entire hydrogen fuel cell and battery powertrain being located under the floor, allowing almost all of the space above to be used for passengers and luggage. It’s total range using battery and hydrogen fuel-cell power is just more than 300 miles. Dodge Zeo Described by Chrysler as a ‘youthful, all-electric, 21st century muscle car’, the Dodge Zeo features 2+2 seating, flared wheelarches and a squared-off rear end.
It is unique among this trio of concept cars because it is battery-powered-only, with no combustion engine or fuel-cell propulsion. Despite this, it can accelerate from 0-60mph in less than 8 seconds and go 250 miles between charges. Jeep Renegade This dinky 4×4 features a battery with a 40-mile range and a small diesel engine that can significantly extend this. Although there are no exact details of the diesel unit that will be used, Chrysler is claiming it will achieve 110mpg.
Chrysler says the two-seater is a genuine off-roader, and features include a rollover bar and an interior that can be hosed down.
