It would be powered by an electric motor and lithium-ion battery link-ed to a small diesel engine. Chrysler envisions that it will get more than 110 miles per gallon of diesel fuel and have a long range between plug-in charges.

Chrysler indicated there have been two reasons for Dodge’s performance. For one thing, the company eliminated about two months of production as it switched in the fall to the new minivan models, squeezing overall supplies. Second, Dodge eliminated the short-wheelbase Caravan model with the reconfigured minivan platform, cutting itself out of a significant portion of sales to consumers who preferred them.

It’s not all bad news for Chrysler. Sales of the more luxurious Chrysler Town Country were up 10 percent in November _ the second full month of sales _ compared to the year before, according to Autodata Corp. Dodge Grand Caravan sales fell 6 percent, a drop Chrysler blamed on the elimination of the shorter, lower-priced Dodge Caravan model. Still, that was a better performance than August, when sales of the aging Caravan and Grand Caravan were down 28 percent.

DETROIT Chrysler LLC, looking to return to profitability by 2009, is considering massive branding changes that would further simplify the product portfolio while helping to cut as many as 1,000 dealers. A plan now being discussed calls for Chrysler dealers to sell all of the auto maker’s passenger cars under the Chrysler name.

As indicated by the Middle East performance, Jeep brand sales continued to be strong, with an increase of 14 percent year-to-date (88,009 units) outside North America. Dodge brand sales continued to grow at an accelerated pace as well. Sales for the brand exceeded 50,000 units so far in 2007, and have roughly doubled last year’s sales during the same time period. Chrysler brand sales have declined for the year, but sales for some Chrysler models have been increasing rapidly.

Chrysler Canada will shut down production and idle about 4,900 workers at its minivan assembly complex in Windsor for two weeks next month. Ken Lewenza, president of Local 444 of the Canadian Auto Workers, confirmed yesterday the company has informed the union that production will stop during the weeks of Jan. 14 and Jan. 21 at the three-shift operation.

Gaz, the Russian truck, van and busmaker, is in talks with Chrysler and General Motors about possible joint projects in passenger car production. Leonid Dolgov, chief executive of Gaz s car division, told the Financial Times it was no secret his company was involved in talks with Chrysler. The Russian carmaker buys engines from Chrysler for its Volga sedans and Gazelle delivery vans. Next year it intends to launch a rebranded version of the Chrysler Sebring.
