Chrysler said it sold 161,088 units. Gainers included the Sebring convertible, the Town & Country minivan and the Dodge Charger while consumers were more inclined to bypass large SUVs such as the Jeep Commander. Ford said continued demand for crossovers and fuel-sippers, as well as increased fleet sales, drove its U.S. sales in November to 182,951 units, up 0.4 percent from 182,259 a year ago.

New Castle ’s school board has voted 3-2 to drop Chrysler from the name of its high school. Beginning in 2011, the school will simply be called New Castle High School, according to The Star Press of Muncie. The school was named Walter P. Chrysler Memorial High School when built in 1955, but sentiment to change the name cropped up after Chrysler sold its huge plant in the eastern Indiana town to Metaldyne Corp. in 2003.

Chrysler’s continued success with the segment it helped create in the 1980s is predicated on attracting more buyers such as Amante Bustamante, who last month purchased a 2008 Town & Country Limited. The 35-year-old’s purchase is his first minivan and first-ever Chrysler product. Bustamante, from Ashburn, Va., purchased the van primarily to haul his family, including a 3-year-old and another on the way, on vacations and to a range of activities.

WINDSOR, Ontario Chrysler will build a minivan for Volkswagen in Canada to sell in the U.S. market starting next year. The new vehicle will be unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show in February and will go on sale in October as a 2009 model. It will be produced alongside the Chrysler Town Country and Dodge Caravan at Chrysler’s Windsor assembly plant and will share Chrysler’s new fifth-generation platform but will have its own VW-style appearance.

Chrysler pioneered fuel cell vehicle technology more than 10 years ago. Fuel cells release energy from the reaction of hydrogen with a catalyst and oxygen. This clean technology operates at a high level of efficiency and is true zero-emission. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles emit only pure water vapor as exhaust. Fuel cell systems are part of Chrysler’s advanced-propulsion technology umbrella, which includes efficient gasoline engines, advanced diesels and hybrid powertrain systems.

Landry admitted the company has lagged in hybrid technology, but it’s hoping to make up the lost ground on fuel-efficient vehicles. The company recently built a plant in Dundee, Mich., that makes only four-cylinder engines. Chrysler can currently use about 300,000 or 400,000 yearly, but the plant has capacity for 600,000 per year.

Chrysler offers one of the most comprehensive Certified Pre-owned Vehicle programs in the industry. For a vehicle to be certified under Chrysler’s used- vehicle program, it must be a 2002 through 2007 model pre-owned vehicle with less than 65,000 miles and pass a stringent 125-point mechanical, safety and condition standard inspection.
