Chrysler upstaged General Motors and other automakers with its announcement recently it will introduce a group of electric vehicles for the consumer market beginning in 2010, including a version of its popular Town & Country minivan and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four-door sport utility vehicle. The third vehicle will be a high-performance Dodge sports car based on the architecture of the Lotus Elise sports car from England.

Chrysler LLC, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., produces Chrysler,Jeep(R), Dodge and Mopar(R) brand vehicles and products. Total sales worldwidein 2007 were 2.7 million vehicles. Sales outside of North America were thehighest ever with an increase of 15 percent over 2006. Its product lineupfeatures some of the world’s most recognizable vehicles, including theChrysler 300 and Town Country, Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and DodgeChallenger and Ram.

Chrysler is slowing down production at its minivan complex in Windsor for up to three weeks and laying off workers to tighten inventories. About 3,400 workers on the rotating day and afternoon shifts started taking turns yesterday at one week on the job and the other off. If current inventories don’t remain in check, Chrysler could extend the reduction to the overnight shift, which will affect another 1,600 workers in a third week, according to company spokesperson Ed Saenz.

So when VW heard its traditional customers the young American couples have apparently been deserting their Golfs, Jettas and Passats for Mommy-vans VW knew it needed a traditional American-style minivan, a segment VW considers essential to growing its market share in the US.

The Chrysler Town & Country is first in the minivan segment to feature Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path advanced safety systems. BSM detects a possible unseen vehicle when changing lanes. The Rear Cross Path System aids the driver any time the vehicle is in reverse and warns if any traffic is moving toward the vehicle. Both systems utilize dual ultra-wideband radar sensors that notify the driver via an audible chime and a visible icon on outside mirrors.

Chrysler Chrysler puts a gasoline-electric system into its biggest SUV, Aspen. The full-size Aspen Hybrid uses a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with Multi-Displacement System, which changes to four-cylinder mode when less power is needed. Horsepower peaks at 390, and towing capacity is a hefty 6,000 pounds. The 300C large sedan can be had with a more powerful Hemi V-8 than before. The 5.7-liter V-8 provides 359 horses.

Soon it may not even be the nation’s biggest vehicle manufacturer.
