Though announced at the 2007 Los Angeles auto show, the hybrid twins were to launch in the fall of 2008 and achieve better fuel economy than GM’s full-size hybrid SUVs. Chrysler says that there were many pre-orders for the two models, but it can’t justify operating the plant for the hybrids alone. A Chrysler spokesperson refused comment when ask what would happen to the approximately 3000 pre-orders that were already placed.

On top of yesterday’s news Chrysler plans to shut down the Delaware SUV plant that makes the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen a year early is news this morning the automaker plans to cut 25% of their 18,500 white collar staff starting next month.

DETROIT (AP) - The employment carnage in the ever-shrinking U.S. auto industry continued yesterday as Chrysler LLC announced it would get rid of 1,825 factory jobs and General Motors Corp. trimmed some benefits and said it would make further white-collar cuts.

DETROIT– Chrysler LLC apparently suffered a $660 million loss in the second quarter, based on earnings figures reported by Daimler AG, which owns a 19.9% stake in the auto maker. News of the loss comes as Chrysler’s majority owner, Cerberus Capital Management LP, is in talks to merger the car maker with General Motors Corp. Both Chrysler and GM are losing money, and analysts estimate both companies could start to run short of cash in about 12 months.

Remember the $700 billion U.S. government bailout? Along with bad home mortgages, the bailout includes authorization for the Treasury Department to buy distressed auto loans’. Cerberus executives want control of GMAC in order to cash-in on the government bailout. The problem is they have to first unload Chrysler’s money-losing auto manufacturing business.

Chrysler Canada says it is cutting its salaried, white-collar workforce by 25 per cent, or almost 240 jobs, as the downturn in the North American auto industry deepens. In announcing a continent-wide reduction of staff and contract workers, the company’s Detroit-based parent said yesterday it would achieve the reduction through lucrative voluntary retirement incentives, buyout programs and layoffs during the next few months.

The alliance with Mercedes-Benz’s German parent was supposed to be a merger of equals to create an international auto superpower. Daimler-Benz would receive a big stake in the U.S. market, and Chrysler would get the international presence it wanted and some access to Mercedes’ luxury platforms it needed.

Chrysler to Cut 25% of White-Collar Jobs DETROIT (Dow Jones) — Chrysler LLC told employees Friday that it will cut 25% of white-collar jobs next month. In a letter to employees, Chief Executive Robert Nardelli said the cuts are necessary because of the deep downturn in the economy and the tightening credit situation, which is choking off auto sales.

Though Daimler and Chrysler split last year , cooperation between the two carmakers is ongoing, and it looks to be headed into the future as well, with the next-generation Mercedes four-cylinder diesel headed into Chrysler vehicles in Europe, according to the latest reports. A 2.1L unit will be the first, though a larger unit could follow sometime later. The engine will be used throughout Chrysler’s brands in Europe, including Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge, reports AutoTelegraaf .
