GM/Chrysler talks intensify, Europe carmakers warn

DETROIT/PARIS (Reuters) - General Motors Corp GM.N intensified talks to acquire Chrysler LLC on Friday amid a worsening global auto downturn that forced deep cuts of salaried jobs at Chrysler and a warning from France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen PEUP.PA . Shares of U.S. automakers and parts suppliers also fell under a broader stock market decline on Friday, including a 26-year low at No. 2 U.S.-based automaker Ford Motor Co F.N which is also cutting back due to the industrywide slowdown.

Chrysler drops three of its all-wheel-drive passenger cars

Few customers bought AWD Dodge Calibers. The 2009 Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger, and Dodge Caliber will no longer offer an all-wheel-drive option, Chrysler told Ward’s Auto last week. The Sebring and Avenger midsize sedans and the Caliber compact hatchback were only recently introduced with the feature, which helps traction in rough conditions like mud or snow.. Chrysler said only around 5% of Calibers and 1% of Sebrings and Avengers were selling with the feature.

Speculation over GM-Chrysler merger has local union members on edge

Renault-Nissan exploring Chrysler options

The Renault-Nissan alliance, which has long sought a North American partner, is reemerging as a possible suitor for Chrysler. Renault-Nissan officials have visited Chrysler facilities, including the automaker’s Auburn Hills headquarters, people told the Free Press. One person said Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of both Renault and Nissan, has people in the United States analyzing options with Chrysler, in what could be seen as a sign of the alliance’s interest in expanding.

Chrysler’s future crumbling along with troubled economy

There would be fewer job cuts than there would be with GM. Chrysler also needs to shed dealers, which would be a major and expensive headache for GM. GM also has too many dealers in the U.S. market, but found out how difficult it is to reduce the size of that group when it killed off its Oldsmobile division in 2000. “GM had 300 Oldsmobile dealers that were hanging on for dear life and it cost [GM] an arm and a leg,” said one industry source. Chrysler has about 3,000 U.S. dealers.

Chrysler Hybrid SUVs Rated by EPA at MPG

The Durango and Aspen Hybrids share a dual-mode hybrid system jointly developed with GM, BMW and Daimler. The SUVs are equipped with Chrysler’s 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with cylinder deactivation. Combined output is 400 horsepower, with 380 pound-feet of torque.

Chrysler’s AWD Sebring, Caliber, and Avenger Lose Traction in U.S. Market

The only all wheel drive cars from Chrysler should be called Eagles or Jeeps. The Compass and Patriot already have the on road and off road wagon covered, so there is no need for an AWD Caliber, though a turbo AWD Compass would be a good addition. They are going to stop making the Sebring sedan so Sebring will mean convertible, Avenger will mean FWD sedan and Eagle Vision should be an AWD sedan. Then they also need to bring back the Eagle Talon hatchback on the Compass/Patriot frame.
